December 2014 Budget

This time of year is usually when I tend to overspend–with my birthday, Christmas, and crazy-good sales going on, there is a lot of temptation to buy ALL THE THINGS. Fortunately, this year I managed to stay within my alotted budget (with $3 to spare!). I ended up buying several inexpensive items rather than a couple pricier ones:

1. faux fur vest {Delia’s} $25 seen here Seth and I did a little window shopping on Black Friday at the Super Target near our hotel, and I came across this fur vest in white. It fit surprisingly well, and it was soft–I wanted to buy the brown version, but it was sold out online and pretty much non-existent in stores. So I bought a very close look-alike from Delia’s during their Black Friday promotion. So far, so good!

2. navy + white striped vest {Old Navy} $15 OK, so I officially have a vest problem. They just make layering for the cold so much easier (and more fun!). I had some Gap rewards cash to use up, plus there was a 40% off sale going on, so I went ahead and bought this one before it sold out (which it did).

3. hello tee {J.Crew Factory} $21 seen here I bought this to address my serious lack of graphic tees problem. I always love J.Crew’s collector tees, so I’m pretty sure this one will be in regular rotation on the weekends.

4. polka dot cardigan {Merona via Target} $13 This purchase was the result of another online Black Friday/CYber Monday sale–Target’s 40% off apparel sale, to be precise. Cardigans and polka dots are two of my favorite things, so there is no doubt this will get used!

5. purple crew neck sweater {Mossimo via Target} $11 seen here Yet another purchase from the aforementioned Target sale. I really don’t own much in the way of purple (or sweaters, for that matter). I have been really impressed with the quality of the sweater, considering how inexpensive it was. I am tempted to buy a few more colors in the future.

6. red straight jeans {Loft via eBay} $15 seen here I told the saga of the red pants in this post, but in a nutshell, I’ve been looking for red pants for a long time. And now I have a pair.

7. gold glitter clutch {Target} $16 seen here I am on a bit of a sparkle/glitter kick these days, so that’s how this clutch made it into my cart. It’s so fun, and the glitter doesn’t seem to get everywhere (which is true of so many glittery items I’ve owned in the past).

8. crystal necklace {Target} $13 I’ve seen the J.Crew version of this necklace all over blogland, but I’ve never been willing to spend $30 on a statement necklace. Enter: Target dupe. I think it’s a good all-purpose necklace that seemingly goes with everything and isn’t overwhelmingly glitzy.

9. gift bow earrings {Kohl’s via Poshmark*} $12 Speaking of dupes, these earrings are a fantastic replica of the highly coveted Kate Spade version (which currently sell for almost $300 on eBay!). I think they’re festive without being tacky.

10. gray smoking flats {Christian Siriano for Payless}, $17 I’ve had my eye on these flats for quite some time now. The loafer style is comfy, flattering, and polished–I think they’ll look great with some of my dress pants.

11. cobalt blue purse {Old Navy} $14 This was another item toward which I applied that 40% off and Gap rewards cash. I actually saw this purse featured in Redbook magazine a couple months ago, but I never saw it pop up online until a few weeks ago. I really love the fun color and sophisticated shape.

December total: $174

2014 total: $1997

Remaining budget: $3

Yay for staying in budget for 2014! Maybe I’ll go use those three dollars for a celebratory cup of coffee at Starbucks or something. I think this style of budget works really well for me–having a year-long allowance permits some flexibility for my changing schedule and the sales at the end of each season. For 2015, I’m actually planning on having a separate account for these type of purchases. I’ll deposit $2000 at the beginning of the year so I can better visualize my spending throughout the year.

How did you fare in December? How about 2014 as a whole?

  1. Ooh! I think the striped vest and polka dot cardigan are my favorites! I know you’ll style that cardigan in a hundred different ways, with all the colorful bottoms and tops that you have!
