plaid gone fancy

DSC_8490In my closet at least, plaid + denim are BFF. That is to say, I don’t think I’ve ever worn a plaid shirt with anything other than jeans. That’s not exactly an earth-shattering observation, as they’re both comfy weekend staples that hardly ever clash with each other. But after seeing “dressed up plaid” on bloggers like Lisa, I decided to go a little fancier.

DSC_8478I tried pairing my red plaid shirt with a few different types of bottoms, including navy work pants and a black leather skirt, but I finally settled on the one you see here. Pencil skirts are kind of annoying in that I feel like I have to suck in my gut all day, but they do have that classic, streamlined silhouette.

DSC_8504Accessorizing, by contrast, was a no-brainer. Pearls and plaid seem to play well together!

How would you dress up a plaid shirt?

  1. I love plaid or gingham button ups with pencil skirts for work! It’s one of my favorite no-brainer work outfits when I don’t have a lot of time to think when getting dressed.

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one. Sometimes I read magazine articles that extol the virtues of the pencil skirt, and I’m like, “yes, but I can’t eat a big lunch while wearing one, which is a big con!”

  2. I really like pairing plaid with blazers. I used to love the pencil skirt until one day I ate a big lunch while wearing an a-line skirt… and nobody ever found out. Because a-line skirts are a girl’s best friend.

  3. this is one of my all-time favorite looks on everyone and anyone! it feels like it’s been a while since i’ve seen you in a skirt too, so i’m glad you paired this top + necklace with that great navy skirt. love it, caroline!

    • You’re so right, Heidi–I’ve been neglecting my skirts a lot lately, mostly just because of the cold (and I hate tights). I should make it a goal to wear my skirts more often!
