May 2016 Budget

It’s been a quiet month here on the blog. Between going back to work, Caleb starting daycare, and my grandmother dying, I haven’t had the time or inclination to post. That being said, I did do some shopping in May, so I wanted to be sure to participate in the monthly Budgeting Bloggers link-up.

may 2016

the keepers

striped ponte dress {J.Crew Factory via eBay} $11 (retailed for $98) As I mentioned in my wishlist post, I’ve been on the hunt for a work-appropriate striped dress. I took a gamble when I bid on this J.Crew Factory one on eBay, but fortunately it ended up being a keeper. It’s quite comfy, and as an added bonus, it’s stretchy enough that I can easily pump while I’m wearing it. #momwin

d’orsay pumps in cognac and taupe {Merona via Target} $21 each ($29.99 + BOGO 50% off + 5% Red Card discount) I had been eyeing these pumps for quite some time–I love the sophisticated shape, and they get great reviews in terms of comfort + quality. They finally were included in a BOGO 50% off promotion, so I ordered them, pronto. I’ve worn each pair for a few hours for various occasions, and they’re reasonably comfortable, given their pointy toes.

black coated skinny jeans {Ann Taylor} $35 ($98 marked down to $70 + 50% promotion) So this leather trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, right? I love the way others look in leather pants, but I’m not brave enough to try it just yet. So coated skinnies are my compromise. I probably won’t be able to wear these much until cold weather returns, but the price and the fit were too good to pass up.

black laser cut dress {Loft} $14 ($90 marked down to $84 + 60% off promotion + $20 rewards) This one wasn’t exactly a fun purchase. My grandmother passed away at the end of April, so I needed a black dress to wear to her memorial service. Technically, I have this one already, but the idea of wearing a quilted knit dress in the Florida heat sounded pretty awful. Fortunately, I was able to find this lighter weight one for a steal.

white eyelet skirt {Gap Factory} $12 ($40 marked down to $20 + 30% off clearance + extra 15% off coupon) Truth be told, I’ve been wanting a white eyelet dress for a while now, but dresses are a bit tricky with the whole breastfeeding/pumping thing. So rather than buy a dress that I wouldn’t wear much until next spring, instead I decided to get this cute eyelet skirt. It’s slightly sheer, so I might need to wear a slip with it, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for a fun, $12 skirt!

olive green linen skirt {J.Crew Factory} $24 ($60 marked down to $40 + 40% off promotion)  I have quite a few of these elastic waist skirts from J.Crew and J.Crew Factory; they’re slightly dressier than shorts for summertime and come in a zillion colors. Plus, they fit even if you have some fluctuation in weight (I wore my plaid one 10 days after giving birth!). Olive green is a color I tend to wear a lot of these days, so I thought it might be nice to have a skirt in that hue.

the returns

Before settling on the striped dress I described above, I tried this one from Macy’s. I ordered a small, and it was just a bit too tight in the chest for my liking. It was also $40 on sale, which I thought was a bit steep for a casual dress like this one.

the extras

I sent in a bag to ThredUp several weeks ago, so I used the credits from that to buy a short trench originally from Gap (satisfying another wishlist item!) and a striped + polka-dotted tee originally from Loft. My mom also gifted me these adorable laser cut pumps (in ivory), after realizing that the heels are a bit too high for her to wear comfortably.

May total: $138

2016 total: $815

Remaining budget: $1185

As predicted, I didn’t have as much time to shop this month, which is reflected in the slightly lower monthly total. The skirts will definitely get immediate use–my work uniform these days is a skirt + dressy tee + flats. Plus, the dress and shoes have already been worn several times, so all of those items can be considered “wise purchases.” The coated skinnies might end up being a waste of money…but we’ll see.

As for next month, my main objective is to get a decent white tee. Somehow, after all these closet purges, I’ve ended up without a single white tee. How does that happen?! Anyway, I’d like to find a decent quality one that isn’t too sheer, perhaps from Everlane. I’m also considering pulling the trigger and buying the cognac cross body bag that’s on my wishlist.

What did you buy May?
