August 2016 Budget

With all the fall merchandise hitting stores this month, I was all set to buy, buy, buy, but as you’ll see below, my spending ended up being pretty close to my monthly average. I even went to our local outlet mall during the tax-free weekend, and I didn’t buy anything (at least for myself–I did stock up on shorts for Caleb!). Nonetheless, I did end up finding a few things in my online shopping adventures–see them below!

the keepers

red flats {J.Crew} $48 ($98 marked down to $79.99 + extra 40% off) I mentioned that I had ordered these in my last budget post. I was a little nervous about ordering them, as they were final sale, and I had never tried them on in store. However, reviews seemed to indicate that they run relatively true to size, so I took the gamble. Fortunately, they worked out just fine! I love their sophisticated silhouette and cheery shade of red. Worn here and here.

tortoise link necklace {J.Crew} $40 (full price! gasp!) A very helpful reader suggested I try this necklace after seeing that I was in search of a tortoise link necklace in this wishlist post. I took her advice, and I am so glad I did! It’s not too chunky (a concern with a style I had been eyeing), and, as a bonus, the length is adjustable. The price tag is a bit higher than I would prefer, but hopefully it’s something I’ll wear for years.

black glitter stud earrings {Kate Spade via Nordstrom} $21 ($38 on sale for $20.90) These earrings were a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale find. I have a similar pair in “opal glitter” that I bought a few months ago; I’ve been satisfied with the size and quality of them, so I gave these a try. I think they’ll be a good way to add some subtle embellishment for my otherwise boring outfits!  Worn here.

rose gold watch {BP via Nordstrom} $25 (full price) I’ve been resistant to the rose gold trend up until this point, but when I was browsing around the Nordstrom website during the Anniversary Sale, I spotted this sleek watch and loved it. I’m not sure what colors to wear it with just yet, but I’ve been impressed with its sophisticated look and quality considering its price tag. It was an impulse purchase, but I’m not mad about it.

chambray peplum top {Banana Republic} $19 ($68 marked down to $39.99 + extra 50% off) I’ve worn my chambray button-up quite a bit over the years, but lately I’ve been in search of something in the same fabric that would read more “professional.” I stalked this top for a while and was about to order it when it was still almost $50…then it magically hit the sale section! I ordered it during an extra 50% off promo, and I’m pretty pleased with it. It does wrinkle easily, so I guess I need to dig out the steamer if I want to wear it again anytime soon… Worn here and here

gray tee {J.Crew Factory} $14 ($22.50 on sale for $14) This is a pretty boring purchase but very necessary. I’ve been pinning lots of looks lately that involve a gray tee (for example, this), but I didn’t own one. Normally, I don’t advocate buying an item just to recreate something on Pinterest, but I felt like this was inexpensive and versatile enough to be justified.

gold tassel necklace {Forever 21} $7 (full price) I keep having to replace my gold tassel necklace–I can’t seem to find one that is of decent enough quality such that it lasts more than a year. Until I find something sturdier, I just keep cycling through F21 versions. Worn here.

the returns

My boyfriend jeans are now a couple sizes too big, so I ordered these in a smaller size as a potential replacement. They were still way too big, and I just didn’t like the wash either. Next.

the extras

I used some blog income to buy a pair of consigned Joules rain boots. I definitely didn’t need these, as I already own a pair of green Hunter boots, but I just couldn’t resist the bow back and rich red color. They were new in box and cost me less than half of the retail price! I also used a gift card to get this pretty eyelet skirt. Hopefully I can get a few wears out of it before the end of the summer.

August total: $173

2016 total: $1314

Remaining budget: $686

I was all about the accessories this month! I have been in need of some interesting necklaces after I cleared out much of my jewelry stash a few months ago, so I think the two described above were wise purchases. Plus, the red flats are a wardrobe staple in my mind, so I’m glad to have snagged a leather pair for less than $50.

Looking ahead, I have quite a few items in mind for my next wishlist post (keep an eye out in the next few days!). First among them is a pair of boyfriend jeans (see the returns section above), as I really came to love my Loft pair before they stopped fitting correctly. I’m also hoping to find a suede skirt for the fall.

What did you buy in August?

  1. Loving those red flats! They have such a sophisticated cut for a flat, I would have expected them to have a heel. Nicely done on getting that peplum top at such a heavy mark down as well. This month was heavy in thrifted pants for me – two pairs of jeans and two pairs of Banana Republic Sloan pants.

Do you find your little one grabs at necklaces, or do you only wear them at work? I love the tassel and lariat necklace looks, but I’m afraid my son will grab at them.
