October 2016 Budget

Hello again! I’m just popping in again to update you on my shopping adventures. I’m currently writing this post amidst a sea of boxes in my living room–moving day is a week away! I’m excited to get into the swing of blogging again soon–the weather is finally turning a bit cooler, and I’ll have a bunch of new spots for outfit photos in our new house 🙂

As expected, I didn’t have much time to shop this month. In fact, I would have been way under budget had I not stopped into Target last week for some packing tape. Somehow, after grabbing said tape, I ended up digging through a rack of sweaters on sale. Oops. Details on that (and more!) below:

the keepers

black gingham scarf {Old Navy} $17 (full price) I stopped into Old Navy a few weeks ago to look for winter pajamas for Caleb. I didn’t have any luck with that, but I happened to notice this fetching scarf on my way out. It’s actually a nice lightweight material, which is much more practical for Alabama’s climate. I rarely pay full price for anything (particularly at stores like ON that have sales all the time), but the damage was pretty minimal for this impulse purchase.

green wrap dress {Banana Republic Factory} $32 ($79.99 + 60% off coupon) I rarely buy dresses for a specific occasion, but I thought this pretty green color would be so perfect for my cousin’s wedding to be held in the Chicago Botanic Garden. I actually worked hard to save some money on this dress. I had originally bought it when it was a mere 30% off, and then I inconveniently received a 60% off coupon the next day. We were departing for Chicago soon after, so I returned to the outlet mall to get the price adjustment. It was a bit of a hassle, but it saved me $24! As a side note, this dress is available only in petite sizes, but the size small hit me just above the knee (I’m 5’6“).

gray tortoise necklace {J.Crew Factory} $12 ($49.50 marked down to $24.99 + extra 50% off) I had been eyeing this necklace ever since it popped up on the JCF website earlier this fall, but it seemed like such a “non-essential” (which, let’s face it, it is) that I didn’t want to spend 20 bucks on it, plus shipping. However, on one of my aforementioned trips to the outlet mall, I stopped in and saw it beckoning me from the clearance rack. At $12, I couldn’t pass it up.

plaid shirt {J.Crew Factory} $30 ($64.50 on sale for $29.95) I really don’t need another plaid shirt, but this particular version had such a lovely combination of colors and lightweight material (read: not flannel) that I decided to bring it home with me. I’m planning on pairing it with my red vest the next time I want to feel festive!

striped turtleneck {Merona via Target} $14 ($14.99 + 5% off REDcard discount) A striped turtleneck has been on my wishlist for a while now (see this post for proof!). I never did get the J.Crew version I’d been lusting after, but this cheapie version seems to be just fine. Gotta love Target. I’m planning on using it for layering later this fall.

textured cardigan in navy + black {Merona via Target} $21 each ($29.99 + BOGO 50% off + 5% off REDcard discount) These are the sweaters that ruined my almost-under-budget October. I bought it in ivory last year and absolutely loved it (and have worn it three times this week alone…), so when I spotted them on the rack, I grabbed them immediately. Upon further inspection, the material seems a bit different and not as soft as last year’s version, so I’m a bit undecided as to whether I’ll keep them. With our impending move, I’m sure I’ll be back at Target many times, should I want to return them…to be decided.

the returns

No returns this month! I came very close to buying these boots while on a family shopping excursion in Chicago, but I decided that they would be a bit redundant in my bootie collection. I sure love that fringe though!

the extras

I sold some clothing this month, so I used some of that money to buy a few items second-hand. Namely, a chambray dress originally from Gap and two skirts originally from Loft (in burgundy and camel). With that, I should be set for my fall wardrobe! Well, for now anyway…

October total: $148

2016 total: $1652

Remaining budget: $348

I had hoped that I would be too busy to shop this month, but alas, I still found a few occasions to do so. Nonetheless, I don’t regret any of these purchases (although I’m still undecided on the cardigans). The green dress has already been worn for a formal occasion, and it’s the type of garment that easily can be dressed down for a day on campus as well. I always find ways to wear plaid and stripes, so the tops will no doubt be in regular rotation too.

As for the future, I am starting to turn my attention to potential birthday/Christmas wishlist items. On the pricey end, I love the look of this sleek watch…but I might have to keep dreaming about that one. I’m also hoping to find a pair of well-fitting gray ankle pants and/or a gray skirt. I’m increasingly drawn to gray as a neutral these days, so I’d like to add a few more pieces in that color family to my closet.

What did you buy in October?

  1. Good luck with moving! Hopefully it goes smoothly. Personally I hate packing (and unpacking).

I’m such a sucker for plaid shirts too. I was eyeing that JCF plaid shirt, but it’s similar to one I got last year from J.Crew.
