the gingham struggle

When I got dressed on this particular morning, I wanted to combine my black gingham dress and olive green. But I just couldn’t make it work, for whatever reason. The contrast of the feminine cut of the dress and a utility jacket/vest just seemed a little weird to me. Better luck in the fall with my black gingham button up, perhaps.

Instead, I went for my other favorite neutrals: tan and denim. I wore this for my dad’s birthday celebration. With all these grandkids around (6 in total between my sisters and me), it was a pretty crazy night that involved a bathroom being flooded and crying over coconut cake. Oof.

take one, pass it on 2017: days 12-14

I’ve made it two weeks into this challenge, and I think I’ve hit my groove. I’m no longer grumpy about being limited in what I can wear and instead delighted by the opportunity to get creative with my closet. I guess it’s true what they say–it takes two weeks to form a new habit! Here’s a look at what I’ve worn over the past few days:

day twelve:

black striped tank: J.Crew Factory, similar // mustard skirt: Loft (I dyed it from a brighter shade of yellow, seen here), similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // black leather strap watch: Kate Spade New York, similar // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, exact

day thirteen:

chambray button up: Old Navy, similar // mustard skirt: Loft, similar // leopard wedge sandals: Sam Edelman, similar

day fourteen:

chambray button up: Old Navy, similar // black gingham dress: Maison Jules, similar // black wedge sandals: Chaps, exact // red crossbody bag: Ann Taylor, similar // black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

I think one key strategy in my attitude shift for this challenge is the fact that I set aside a few minutes at the beginning of the week to plan out my looks. Up until this point, I had kind of been haphazardly choosing an item to re-mix each day, and the end result was a mish-mash of boring outfits that I didn’t really like that much. I used my handy-dandy garment rack that my husband bought me for Christmas–check out a pic on IG!

last chance

DSC_8172I don’t know about you, but March kind of snuck up on me! All the sudden, I feel like I need to get one last wear out of all my winter clothing. In particular, I really wanted to get some wear out of my vests. I have several of them, but they didn’t get much wear this year due to pregnancy–they looked pretty terrible on me last fall when I was in the last trimester.

DSC_8166I decided to blend a little winter with spring by wearing my navy quilted vest with white jeans a few weeks ago. Add in a little pink gingham, and you have a cheery outfit…even if it did rain all day that day. I’m ready for some sunshine!

on buying multiples

DSC_7977It seems as though it might be a bit taboo in blog-land to admit this, but here goes: I like to buy multiples. When I find an item of clothing that fits me well, I tend to buy a few of them (once the price is right, of course!). Loft’s modern skinny jeans, Banana Republic’s Luxe tees, and, most pertinent to this post, J.Crew’s schoolboy blazers are just a few examples.

DSC_7923I had some extra cash in my PayPal account from eBay sales this month, and I decided to spend it on a new camel blazer. My orangey-red blazer is J.Crew’s schoolboy cut, and it seems to fit me quite well. I scoured eBay until I found a camel version in my size and in excellent condition…and for a fraction of the $200 retail price! I really like its warmer camel color compared to my old one, and I feel like it will last for years to come.
