flutter sleeves

In case you haven’t noticed, flutter sleeves are kind of having a moment right now; it seems most tops these days have a little flutter and/or ruffle action going on. I resisted the trend for a while, as I have pretty broad shoulders, and I wasn’t too keen on adding volume to that part of my body. But when this pom-pom trimmed dress caught my eye, and it just so happened to have some flutter sleeves too, I decided to try out the trend.

To be honest, the sleeves are a bit more voluminous than I’d like, but the dress was final sale…so I’m living with them. I still like the dress though; it’s a fun change of pace from my usual stripes and chambray. On this particular day, I kept things pretty simple by sticking with black and a touch of metallic for accessories.

So, what do you think? Does this dress make me look like a linebacker? How would you wear a dress like this?

These past few days have ended up being extraordinarily eventful–let’s just say a gas leak, a daycare evacuation, and a febrile seizure were involved. On days like those, I am very glad that I already had my outfits planned out so that I can devote my mental energy to the tasks at hand!

day twenty-two:

white lace blouse: J.Crew Factory, similar // red skirt: Loft, similar // black wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

day twenty-three:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // red skirt: Loft, similar // leopard flats: Dr. Scholls, exact // black crossbody bag: Sole Society, exact //  black leather strap watch: Kate Spade New York, similar

day twenty-four:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // skinny jeans: BP, similar // tan jeweled sandals: Mossimo, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, similar

day twenty-five:

olive dress: Amazon, exact // light chambray button-up: Old Navy, similar // nude wedge sandals: Merona, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar

This round had a few surprises in that some of the items were unexpectedly difficult to re-mix. For some reason, I had the hardest time coming up with ideas for the gray tee. I could have chosen something else, but it was kind of annoying me that I couldn’t get creative. I eventually came up with the two looks you see here, but neither is something I am likely to repeat again. Just a few more days of this challenge left!

I’ve made it two weeks into this challenge, and I think I’ve hit my groove. I’m no longer grumpy about being limited in what I can wear and instead delighted by the opportunity to get creative with my closet. I guess it’s true what they say–it takes two weeks to form a new habit! Here’s a look at what I’ve worn over the past few days:

day twelve:

black striped tank: J.Crew Factory, similar // mustard skirt: Loft (I dyed it from a brighter shade of yellow, seen here), similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // black leather strap watch: Kate Spade New York, similar // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, exact

day thirteen:

chambray button up: Old Navy, similar // mustard skirt: Loft, similar // leopard wedge sandals: Sam Edelman, similar

day fourteen:

chambray button up: Old Navy, similar // black gingham dress: Maison Jules, similar // black wedge sandals: Chaps, exact // red crossbody bag: Ann Taylor, similar // black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

I think one key strategy in my attitude shift for this challenge is the fact that I set aside a few minutes at the beginning of the week to plan out my looks. Up until this point, I had kind of been haphazardly choosing an item to re-mix each day, and the end result was a mish-mash of boring outfits that I didn’t really like that much. I used my handy-dandy garment rack that my husband bought me for Christmas–check out a pic on IG!

I’ve got another round of outfits to share today! I hope you like chambray and stripes, because there’s a lot of that going on in these looks…

day eight:

blue + red striped tee: J.Crew Factory, similar // chambray skirt: Loft, similar // tan clog sandals: Lotta  from Stockholm, exact

day nine:

chambray dress: Gap, similar // tan clog sandals: Lotta from Stockholm, exact // gold pendant necklace: J.Crew, similar

day ten:

striped tee dress: H + M, exact // two-tone wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // gold pendant necklace: J.Crew, similar // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker, exact

day eleven:

black striped tank: J.Crew Factory, similar // olive skirt: J.Crew Factory, exact // two-tone wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker, exact// black crossbody bag: Sole Society, exact

Truthfully, much like my last challenge update, my reaction to these outfits is “meh.” I think perhaps I’m just bored with summer (already!) and not really jazzed about wearing skirts and dresses all the time. Maybe some Pinterest surfing is in order to re-inspire me for the many months of summer we have left!
