common threads challenge: week 4

We’ve made it to the end of the Common Threads Challenge! This last week wasn’t much of a struggle actually, mostly because colder weather finally arrived–that opened up all sorts of layering options!

Monday: chambray shirt

I had an important presentation to give on this day, so I wanted to wear a dress, but I also wanted to wear my chambray shirt…so I wore both! I think this ended up being a nice balance between being “put together” but still casual. I need to remember to layer with dresses more often.

chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // striped dress: J.Crew Factory, similar // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, exact // cognac wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact

Tuesday: black knit blazer

Red is an accent color I typically wear quite often, but I’ve been neglecting it for this whole challenge. So, I decided to bust out my bright red pants for a change of pace. I love the vibrant color of these pants (I think Loft called them “fireball red”), but it means I need to keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral.

black knit blazer: Caslon, similar // white lace top: J.Crew Factory, similar // red pants: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, similar

Wednesday: cognac booties

I find myself pinning a lot of looks that involve pink, ivory, and olive, so I decided to put that color palette into action. I’m pretty psyched that it’s finally blanket scarf season 😉

ivory open cardigan: Merona, similar // ivory tee: Banana Republic Factory, exact // olive pants: Banana Republic, similar // pink blanket scarf: Ann Taylor, similar // cognac booties: Jessica Simpson, almost exact

Thursday: olive tee

I wasn’t totally pleased with my olive tee outfit last week, so I decided to try again with slightly different pieces. This time, I subbed the skinny jeans for white jeans and traded the cardigan for my field jacket. I like this look much better!

olive tee: Banana Republic Factory, exact // purple field jacket: J.Crew Factory, similar // white skinny jeans: Loft, similar // taupe booties: Dolce Vita, exact

Friday: burgundy skirt

Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear this time of year, particularly because it pairs well with so many other fall colors, including burgundy. And it delights me to no end that my sweater matches my leopard flats so perfectly.

camel sweater: J.Crew, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // leopard flats: Dr. Scholl’s, exact // gold tassel necklace: Forever 21, similar

Monday: burgundy skirt

Another Monday, another “professional occasion”–this time, a conference on metabolism and cancer. I wanted to try a new color combination involving burgundy, so tried out gray.

gray sweater: J.Crew, similar // polka dot shirt: J.Crew Factory, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // black dial watch: Wristology, exact

Tuesday: chambray shirt

Seeing as it was Halloween and all, I decided that I needed some orange in my outfit. I’ve had this pin sitting on my “what to wear” board forever, and this seemed like a good occasion to try it out.

chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // orange cardigan: J.Crew, similar // black pants: Banana Republic Factory, exact // pearl stud earrings: gift, similar

I had a lot of fun choosing this week’s outfits–so that’s definitely a win! I plan on posting a final re-cap with all 22 of my CTC outfits and a few reflections on the experience.

common threads challenge: week 1

It’s been awhile since I last posted! My husband accidentally broke my tripod (not really sure how–I just know that the pressure washer was involved…), and I’m entering into serious writing season for my PhD; the combination of the two has put blogging on the back-burner. All that being said, I am still participating in the Common Threads Challenge, and I wanted to be sure to share my first few outfits with you.

Monday: olive tee

olive tee: Banana Republic Factory, exact // black skinny jeans: Loft, similar // black leather flats: BCBGeneration, similar // leopard scarf: Joe Fresh, similar

To be honest, I really wanted to copy this exact outfit, but I decided I should try to put my own spin on it. Plus, I was just really in the mood to wear a scarf! Olive + leopard is definitely a go-to around here.

Tuesday: burgundy skirt

black stripe 3/4 sleeve tee: Merona, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // black leather flats: BCBGeneration, similar // black leather strap watch: Kate Spade, exact // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, similar

I think this look is the winner of the week. I say that because a stranger stopped me on my way in to work and said, “You look cute!” I almost wish that I had a neck scarf or something to give the outfit a little French girl flair.

Wednesday: chambray shirt

chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // mustard jeans: Loft, similar // two tone wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // reversible tote: Street Level, exact // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, exact

I’ve actually worn some version of this outfit several times, although I most often wear it with my striped chambray popover. I was tempted to wear my cognac booties with this outfit, but ultimately decided I would go one CTC item at a time, at least for this first week.

Thursday: black knit blazer

black knit blazer: Caslon, similar // spotted blouse: Loft, similar // olive pants: Banana Republic, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, similar

I’ve had this pin sitting on my “must re-create” list for a long time now. I finally got around to it, but I’m not so excited about the end result. For starters, why does my blazer look lopsided?! And perhaps I should have left the top untucked. Oh, well.

Friday: cognac booties

plum tee: Banana Republic Factory, similar // ivory cardigan: Merona, similar // skinny jeans: BP, similar // gold pendant necklace: J.Crew, similar // cognac booties: Jessica Simpson, almost exact

Let me just be honest and say that this outfit was completely weather inappropriate. The day started off cool, but by mid-day, it was up to the 80s–not exactly sweater and bootie temps. This sweater is gigantic (and hence, not very flattering), partially because I bought it when I was pregnant two years ago…but I think I love it a little more just because it’s so over-sized.

This first week hasn’t been too difficult–we’re just beginning with our five pieces! That being said, I think the item I’ll have the most trouble re-wearing is the burgundy skirt. Any suggestions are welcome…

best decision ever

DSC_7121A few months ago, I bought a big, cozy ivory cardigan from Target. At the time, I was a little miffed that I had to pay full price for it (well, minus the 5% discount for using my Red Card), but I have to say, I’m so glad I bought it when I had the chance. As it turns out, the ivory color was pretty popular and sold out quickly in my local store and online.

DSC_7117I wore this sweater a few times while I was pregnant (see it here), but I’m finding that I wear it far more often these days. It’s just so oversized and perfect for the chilly weather we’ve been having. My only regret now is that I wish I had bought one in every color!

On this particular day, I wore the cardigan with some hunter green, gold, and cognac. I just love the touch of whimsy that my elephant necklace adds to the outfit 🙂

the cozy cranberry

DSC_5968In my most recent budget post, I mentioned my new ivory cardigan. Here it is, in all its lovely cream-colored coziness.

DSC_5953It’s the perfect size (I’m wearing a medium), and I love how I can throw it on over pretty much anything and still feel put together (well, at least more so than if I had opted for my ratty old fleece jacket).

Another new item in this look is my tortoise shell earrings. I was a little disappointed when they arrived because the tortoise piece had fallen out of one of the backings, but it was nothing a little trusty super glue couldn’t fix. Still, I would have expected better quality from Ralph Lauren. At least they were only $12! As for the rest of the look, I wore my burgundy cranberry dress yet again, plus my cognac boots. I’m so glad fall has finally decided to show up in Alabama!
