common threads challenge: week 4

We’ve made it to the end of the Common Threads Challenge! This last week wasn’t much of a struggle actually, mostly because colder weather finally arrived–that opened up all sorts of layering options!

Monday: chambray shirt

I had an important presentation to give on this day, so I wanted to wear a dress, but I also wanted to wear my chambray shirt…so I wore both! I think this ended up being a nice balance between being “put together” but still casual. I need to remember to layer with dresses more often.

Tuesday: black knit blazer

Red is an accent color I typically wear quite often, but I’ve been neglecting it for this whole challenge. So, I decided to bust out my bright red pants for a change of pace. I love the vibrant color of these pants (I think Loft called them “fireball red”), but it means I need to keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral.

Wednesday: cognac booties

I find myself pinning a lot of looks that involve pink, ivory, and olive, so I decided to put that color palette into action. I’m pretty psyched that it’s finally blanket scarf season 😉

Thursday: olive tee

I wasn’t totally pleased with my olive tee outfit last week, so I decided to try again with slightly different pieces. This time, I subbed the skinny jeans for white jeans and traded the cardigan for my field jacket. I like this look much better!

Friday: burgundy skirt

Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear this time of year, particularly because it pairs well with so many other fall colors, including burgundy. And it delights me to no end that my sweater matches my leopard flats so perfectly.

Monday: burgundy skirt

Another Monday, another “professional occasion”–this time, a conference on metabolism and cancer. I wanted to try a new color combination involving burgundy, so tried out gray.

Tuesday: chambray shirt

Seeing as it was Halloween and all, I decided that I needed some orange in my outfit. I’ve had this pin sitting on my “what to wear” board forever, and this seemed like a good occasion to try it out.

I had a lot of fun choosing this week’s outfits–so that’s definitely a win! I plan on posting a final re-cap with all 22 of my CTC outfits and a few reflections on the experience.

common threads challenge: week 2

I’m back for another Common Threads Challenge check-in! (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, this post should help!) I’m really starting to enjoy the challenge, as it simplifies getting dressed in the morning. Evidently, limiting my options is key to streamlining the process.

Monday: cognac booties

I just recently got this chambray shirt dress, so naturally, I’ve been eager to wear it. I knew I wanted to wear the dress with my cognac booties, but those two items alone seemed a bit too plain. It was really too warm to wear a scarf, but I wore one anyway. I’m just going to pretend it’s fall now, OK?

Tuesday: olive tee

Once again, I knew I wanted to wear two specific pieces together: my olive tee and this black + ivory skirt. Technically, I wore those two exact pieces together last summer (during my first Take One, Pass It On challenge), so I tried to “fall-ify” the outfit a bit with some booties and a light jacket. I really liked the end result–I think this might be my favorite look from the week!

Wednesday: burgundy skirt

As predicted in my last week, I struggled with this item a bit this time around. I like the combination of ivory, burgundy, and cognac, but I couldn’t quite find the right pieces to execute what I had in mind. Next time, I might try mixing in camel and blue, as shown in this pin.

Thursday: chambray shirt

This look is the most boring one of the week, for sure…but at least I tried to add some interest with my gold flats.

Friday: black blazer

I always like looks that involve a chic blazer with jeans, but I’m not terribly at pulling off such looks myself. I gave it a go for casual Friday, adding in some red stripes and leopard for fun. The outfit kind of fell apart by the end of the day though–I had to take off my blazer once the temperature reached the 80s, and I traded my heels for flats after work to go grocery shopping. So I guess this type of outfit is not terribly practical for my current lifestyle.

Except for the burgundy skirt, I haven’t had too much trouble generating new outfit ideas. One thing I am conscious of is mixing up which day of the week I wear each item, as I tend to see the same people on various days of the week. For example, I attend a weekly seminar every Tuesday, and I want to be sure I’m not wear the same skirt four weeks in a row! I doubt anyone would notice (or care!), but I’m just a little obsessive like that.

a long time coming

I don’t know about you, but whenever I add a look to my Pinterest board, it takes me approximately 10 years to get around to wearing it. OK, I could be exaggerating there, but this look has literally been on my radar for over a year, and I’m just now trying it out for myself.

Something about the contrast of the tan accessories with the gray jeans really intrigued me. I attempted my own rendition, but it was less than perfect, mostly because my jeans don’t fit right. I might try again in the near future with different items from my wardrobe.

transitions

As cliche as it might sound, I’m beginning the process of “transitioning” my outfits from summer to fall. Summer is probably my least favorite season to dress for (which is unfortunate, as it’s definitely the longest one around here…), so I am eager to bring back some of my favorite clothing items and color combinations for the new season.

Burgundy, ivory, and leopard is definitely a trio that I repeat often in the fall and winter (see here, here, here, here, and here) that will no doubt continue to be the case this year. I really liked this outfit, even if the expression on my face doesn’t really convey that fact–I’ve been battling a cold all week, and it’s wearing me down!
