common threads challenge: week 4

We’ve made it to the end of the Common Threads Challenge! This last week wasn’t much of a struggle actually, mostly because colder weather finally arrived–that opened up all sorts of layering options!

Monday: chambray shirt

I had an important presentation to give on this day, so I wanted to wear a dress, but I also wanted to wear my chambray shirt…so I wore both! I think this ended up being a nice balance between being “put together” but still casual. I need to remember to layer with dresses more often.

Tuesday: black knit blazer

Red is an accent color I typically wear quite often, but I’ve been neglecting it for this whole challenge. So, I decided to bust out my bright red pants for a change of pace. I love the vibrant color of these pants (I think Loft called them “fireball red”), but it means I need to keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral.

Wednesday: cognac booties

I find myself pinning a lot of looks that involve pink, ivory, and olive, so I decided to put that color palette into action. I’m pretty psyched that it’s finally blanket scarf season 😉

Thursday: olive tee

I wasn’t totally pleased with my olive tee outfit last week, so I decided to try again with slightly different pieces. This time, I subbed the skinny jeans for white jeans and traded the cardigan for my field jacket. I like this look much better!

Friday: burgundy skirt

Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear this time of year, particularly because it pairs well with so many other fall colors, including burgundy. And it delights me to no end that my sweater matches my leopard flats so perfectly.

Monday: burgundy skirt

Another Monday, another “professional occasion”–this time, a conference on metabolism and cancer. I wanted to try a new color combination involving burgundy, so tried out gray.

gray sweater: J.Crew, similar // polka dot shirt: J.Crew Factory, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // black dial watch: Wristology, exact

Tuesday: chambray shirt

Seeing as it was Halloween and all, I decided that I needed some orange in my outfit. I’ve had this pin sitting on my “what to wear” board forever, and this seemed like a good occasion to try it out.

I had a lot of fun choosing this week’s outfits–so that’s definitely a win! I plan on posting a final re-cap with all 22 of my CTC outfits and a few reflections on the experience.

the balding shoes

Well, I learned something new this week: apparently shoes can go bald. My beloved leopard flats are showing their age these days, most notably by the fact that there are a few areas where the calfhair is missing. Not to worry though–I have a back-up pair that I bought with Amazon rewards points last spring. I know you were concerned.

I still managed to get one more wear out of them though. This outfit ended up being quite comfy for my day of manuscript writing, cross-campus treks, and grocery shopping. To be repeated, for sure!

transitions

As cliche as it might sound, I’m beginning the process of “transitioning” my outfits from summer to fall. Summer is probably my least favorite season to dress for (which is unfortunate, as it’s definitely the longest one around here…), so I am eager to bring back some of my favorite clothing items and color combinations for the new season.

Burgundy, ivory, and leopard is definitely a trio that I repeat often in the fall and winter (see here, here, here, here, and here) that will no doubt continue to be the case this year. I really liked this outfit, even if the expression on my face doesn’t really convey that fact–I’ve been battling a cold all week, and it’s wearing me down!

take one, pass it on 2017: days 22-25

These past few days have ended up being extraordinarily eventful–let’s just say a gas leak, a daycare evacuation, and a febrile seizure were involved. On days like those, I am very glad that I already had my outfits planned out so that I can devote my mental energy to the tasks at hand!

day twenty-two:

white lace blouse: J.Crew Factory, similar // red skirt: Loft, similar // black wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

day twenty-three:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // red skirt: Loft, similar // leopard flats: Dr. Scholls, exact // black crossbody bag: Sole Society, exact //  black leather strap watch: Kate Spade New York, similar

day twenty-four:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // skinny jeans: BP, similar // tan jeweled sandals: Mossimo, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, similar

day twenty-five:

olive dress: Amazon, exact // light chambray button-up: Old Navy, similar // nude wedge sandals: Merona, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar

This round had a few surprises in that some of the items were unexpectedly difficult to re-mix. For some reason, I had the hardest time coming up with ideas for the gray tee. I could have chosen something else, but it was kind of annoying me that I couldn’t get creative. I eventually came up with the two looks you see here, but neither is something I am likely to repeat again. Just a few more days of this challenge left!
