common threads challenge: week 4

We’ve made it to the end of the Common Threads Challenge! This last week wasn’t much of a struggle actually, mostly because colder weather finally arrived–that opened up all sorts of layering options!

Monday: chambray shirt

I had an important presentation to give on this day, so I wanted to wear a dress, but I also wanted to wear my chambray shirt…so I wore both! I think this ended up being a nice balance between being “put together” but still casual. I need to remember to layer with dresses more often.

Tuesday: black knit blazer

Red is an accent color I typically wear quite often, but I’ve been neglecting it for this whole challenge. So, I decided to bust out my bright red pants for a change of pace. I love the vibrant color of these pants (I think Loft called them “fireball red”), but it means I need to keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral.

Wednesday: cognac booties

I find myself pinning a lot of looks that involve pink, ivory, and olive, so I decided to put that color palette into action. I’m pretty psyched that it’s finally blanket scarf season 😉

Thursday: olive tee

I wasn’t totally pleased with my olive tee outfit last week, so I decided to try again with slightly different pieces. This time, I subbed the skinny jeans for white jeans and traded the cardigan for my field jacket. I like this look much better!

Friday: burgundy skirt

Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear this time of year, particularly because it pairs well with so many other fall colors, including burgundy. And it delights me to no end that my sweater matches my leopard flats so perfectly.

Monday: burgundy skirt

Another Monday, another “professional occasion”–this time, a conference on metabolism and cancer. I wanted to try a new color combination involving burgundy, so tried out gray.

Tuesday: chambray shirt

Seeing as it was Halloween and all, I decided that I needed some orange in my outfit. I’ve had this pin sitting on my “what to wear” board forever, and this seemed like a good occasion to try it out.

I had a lot of fun choosing this week’s outfits–so that’s definitely a win! I plan on posting a final re-cap with all 22 of my CTC outfits and a few reflections on the experience.

poppy + stripes

DSC_7252Every time I wear this blazer, I seem to use a different word to describe its color. Today, I’m going with “poppy.”

DSC_7241I really can’t take any credit at all for this outfit–I pretty much copied this look verbatim. But, hey, when Pinterest hands me a no-brainer outfit, I’m not one to refuse.

I’m especially not going to refuse when the shirt matches the lining of my blazer so perfectly. The extent to which this pleases me is slightly embarrassing. But not embarrassing enough for me not to share it with you 🙂

thoughts on orange

DSC_6824Orange is one of those colors that I just don’t wear very often. I think it’s due to a combination of two things: 1) I’m convinced it would look terrible on me, and 2) I’m concerned that I’ll end up looking like a jack-o-lantern. So when I found this blazer in a lovely shade of orange-y red (or perhaps reddish orange?), I thought it might be a nice way to compromise and add something orange-ish to my wardrobe.

DSC_6809So as to avoid the whole Halloween-y vibe, I first tried wearing it in a way that was nearly identical to a look I saw on Pinterest.

DSC_6814I also added my new leopard clutch, just because it came in the mail that day (it was a belated birthday present from Seth).

I think I like the end result of this outfit–I could get into this orange thing. How would you wear the color orange?

neon floral + chambray

DSC_2505Although I bought these floral shorts several weeks ago (I mentioned them in my June budget post), I’m just now getting around to wearing them. I actually had assumed that I would have to wait until next spring to wear them, as my belly has grown quite a bit lately. I was pleasantly surprised though when I tried them on–they fit! Even better, I discovered that they’re actually from Gap’s talls section, which gives them a little extra length.

DSC_2493While I love this print, I’m finding that I really don’t have many tops that match the colors in it. The best I could do for this first go-around was a chambray shirt and a peachy/orangey belt. What tops would you wear with these shorts?
