common threads challenge: week 3

I’ve got another round of outfits from the Common Threads Challenge to share with you today! The further along we get in this challenge, the more I’m relying on Pinterest and other bloggers for styling ideas–my own creativity is just about tapped out at this point. But I’m actually enjoying looking to others for inspiration!

Monday: black knit blazer

Chilly fall temperatures arrived rather abruptly last week, so I struggled a bit with how to wear this blazer. It was a typical fall day in that it started out in the 40s, but was in the mid-70s by the afternoon, so I decided that a thick knit dress with knee-high boots was a good compromise between the two temperature extremes. It’s difficult to see, but I also added my elephant necklace for fun. (You can see a closer picture of the necklace in this post).

Tuesday: cognac booties

I actually stole the outfit for this idea from Alex–I loved how the navy gingham, olive, and white denim looked together, so I pretty much copied the look exactly. I hope she doesn’t mind 😉 I liked the way this outfit turned out, and it makes me want to incorporate white jeans into more of my outfits this winter.

Wednesday: olive tee

I’ll be real here and say this is my least favorite outfit of the week. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to devote to planning this outfit (or photographing it…) due to a sick toddler and a gynecologist appointment I really didn’t want to skip. The cardigan has more of a burgundy hue to it than these pictures suggest (this seems to be a recurring problem with my camera). The cardigan is also just not in good shape and shorter than I prefer…so it might be destined for the donate pile.

Thursday: burgundy skirt

For this outfit, I turned to Pinterest for a little guidance. I found this pin, and I liked the look of black heels with the blue shirt and burgundy pants. I tried out the color combination myself, and I think it works! I went full-on preppy with some pearl earrings and my Kate Spade watch.

blue button-up shirt: Lands’ End, exact // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // pearl stud earrings: gift, similar // black leather strap watch: Kate Spade, exact // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, similar

Friday: chambray shirt

I decided to get a bit more creative with how I wore my chambray shirt this week by layering it under another tee. It’s hard to go wrong with stripes, right?

striped boatneck tee: Merona, similar // chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // black skinny jeans: Loft, similar // cognac suede wedge booties: White Mountain, almost exact // gold locket necklace: J.Crew, similar

So, I think I’ve reached the sweet spot of the challenge–the point when I’ve exhausted my “standard” combinations and start trying new things. It’s at this point that I start to realize the versatility of each item in my closet. Here’s hoping the trend continues for these last few days of the CTC!

take one, pass it on 2017: days 29-31

At long last, the final few outfits on this summer’s Take One, Pass It On challenge! I really liked these last few looks and can see myself repeating all of them in the future.

day twenty-nine:

black striped tee: Mossimo, similar // olive pants: Banana Republic, similar // two tone wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // gold  pendant necklace: J.Crew, similar

day thirty:

red floral tank: Who What Wear, similar // olive pants: Banana Republic, similar // tan wedge sandals: Chaps, exact // reversible tote: Street Level, exact

day thirty-one:

red floral tank: Who What Wear, similar // white jeans: Loft, exact // gold wedge sandals: Lauren Ralph Lauren, exact // gold mesh band watch: BP, similar

I’ll admit, there were times that I was a little hot in these last two outfits owing to the whole pants thing. But, in the overly air-conditioned offices and stores I frequent, I was glad to have the extra coverage. I’ll post a re-cap post of this month’s outfits shortly so that I can reflect on the experience and use it to inform my future wardrobe choices.

Thanks for following along!

take one pass it on 2017: days 1-4

Hello, friends! As I mentioned in my last post, I’m endeavoring to do another Take One, Pass It On challenge this summer as a way to reinvigorate my interest in my closet and this blog. Here we are, four days into the month already (Happy Fourth!), and I’ve yet to post an update–off to a great start, huh? Despite my silence, I have indeed been re-mixing my wardrobe. Days 1-4 below!

day one:

black tee: Banana Republic Factory, almost exact // red stripe skirt: J.Crew Factory, exact // black wedge sandals: Chaps, exact // gold locket necklace: J.Crew, similar// black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

day two:

black tee: Banana Republic Factory, almost exact // white skinny jeans: Loft, exact // leopard wedge sandals: Sam Edelman, similar // gold mesh band watch: BP, similar

day three:

magnolia print top: Banana Republic Factory, similar // white skinny jeans: Loft, exact // gold wedge sandals: Lauren Ralph Lauren, exact // white leather band watch: Timex, similar

day four:

magnolia print top: Banana Republic Factory, similar // black skirt: J.Crew Factory, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact /

The first few days of re-mixing always seem to flow the most freely, so I haven’t found this round of Take One, Pass It On too challenging yet. The day one outfit is one I’ve worn quite a few times this summer, and I can see myself wearing again–I find myself gravitating toward a lot of red lately. The magnolia print top seen in days three and four is a recent purchase, so I’m glad it’s proving to be somewhat versatile.

thoughts on tunics

DSC_8885I’ve never been a big fan of tunics, even when I was pregnant–I have this (perhaps irrational?) concern that they are seriously unflattering on my body type. I always figured they just made my already short legs look even shorter.

DSC_8878But, I’ve made an exception for this one with crochet details. I just liked it too much to pass up! Plus, I’m finding that the older I get, the less I care about whether I’m “allowed” to wear certain types of clothing. Do you ever find yourself following self-made “rules” when it comes to getting dressed?
