common threads challenge: week 4

We’ve made it to the end of the Common Threads Challenge! This last week wasn’t much of a struggle actually, mostly because colder weather finally arrived–that opened up all sorts of layering options!

Monday: chambray shirt

I had an important presentation to give on this day, so I wanted to wear a dress, but I also wanted to wear my chambray shirt…so I wore both! I think this ended up being a nice balance between being “put together” but still casual. I need to remember to layer with dresses more often.

chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // striped dress: J.Crew Factory, similar // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, exact // cognac wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact

Tuesday: black knit blazer

Red is an accent color I typically wear quite often, but I’ve been neglecting it for this whole challenge. So, I decided to bust out my bright red pants for a change of pace. I love the vibrant color of these pants (I think Loft called them “fireball red”), but it means I need to keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral.

black knit blazer: Caslon, similar // white lace top: J.Crew Factory, similar // red pants: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // gray tortoise sunglasses: Warby Parker Banks, similar

Wednesday: cognac booties

I find myself pinning a lot of looks that involve pink, ivory, and olive, so I decided to put that color palette into action. I’m pretty psyched that it’s finally blanket scarf season 😉

ivory open cardigan: Merona, similar // ivory tee: Banana Republic Factory, exact // olive pants: Banana Republic, similar // pink blanket scarf: Ann Taylor, similar // cognac booties: Jessica Simpson, almost exact

Thursday: olive tee

I wasn’t totally pleased with my olive tee outfit last week, so I decided to try again with slightly different pieces. This time, I subbed the skinny jeans for white jeans and traded the cardigan for my field jacket. I like this look much better!

olive tee: Banana Republic Factory, exact // purple field jacket: J.Crew Factory, similar // white skinny jeans: Loft, similar // taupe booties: Dolce Vita, exact

Friday: burgundy skirt

Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear this time of year, particularly because it pairs well with so many other fall colors, including burgundy. And it delights me to no end that my sweater matches my leopard flats so perfectly.

camel sweater: J.Crew, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // leopard flats: Dr. Scholl’s, exact // gold tassel necklace: Forever 21, similar

Monday: burgundy skirt

Another Monday, another “professional occasion”–this time, a conference on metabolism and cancer. I wanted to try a new color combination involving burgundy, so tried out gray.

gray sweater: J.Crew, similar // polka dot shirt: J.Crew Factory, similar // burgundy skirt: Loft, similar // black wedges: Jessica Simpson, exact // black dial watch: Wristology, exact

Tuesday: chambray shirt

Seeing as it was Halloween and all, I decided that I needed some orange in my outfit. I’ve had this pin sitting on my “what to wear” board forever, and this seemed like a good occasion to try it out.

chambray shirt: J.Crew, exact // orange cardigan: J.Crew, similar // black pants: Banana Republic Factory, exact // pearl stud earrings: gift, similar

I had a lot of fun choosing this week’s outfits–so that’s definitely a win! I plan on posting a final re-cap with all 22 of my CTC outfits and a few reflections on the experience.

take one, pass it on 2017: days 22-25

These past few days have ended up being extraordinarily eventful–let’s just say a gas leak, a daycare evacuation, and a febrile seizure were involved. On days like those, I am very glad that I already had my outfits planned out so that I can devote my mental energy to the tasks at hand!

day twenty-two:

white lace blouse: J.Crew Factory, similar // red skirt: Loft, similar // black wedge sandals: b.o.c., similar // black + gold sunglasses: Warby Parker Lovett, exact

day twenty-three:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // red skirt: Loft, similar // leopard flats: Dr. Scholls, exact // black crossbody bag: Sole Society, exact //  black leather strap watch: Kate Spade New York, similar

day twenty-four:

gray tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // skinny jeans: BP, similar // tan jeweled sandals: Mossimo, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar // cognac leather strap watch: Wristology, similar

day twenty-five:

olive dress: Amazon, exact // light chambray button-up: Old Navy, similar // nude wedge sandals: Merona, similar // pink crossbody bag: Old Navy, similar

This round had a few surprises in that some of the items were unexpectedly difficult to re-mix. For some reason, I had the hardest time coming up with ideas for the gray tee. I could have chosen something else, but it was kind of annoying me that I couldn’t get creative. I eventually came up with the two looks you see here, but neither is something I am likely to repeat again. Just a few more days of this challenge left!

take one, pass it on 2017: days 19-21

The longer I do this challenge, the more I realize the seasonality of my wardrobe. What I mean by that is that I’m finding myself re-mixing a lot of the same items as I did in last year’s TOPIO challenge (e.g., olive skirt, lace top), which just goes to show that although I might have hundreds of items in my closet (eek!), I reach for the same 10-20 pieces during a given season. It’s giving me the itch to do another closet purge…

day nineteen:

red striped tee: J.Crew Factory, exact // denim jacket: J.Crew Factory, similar // black skirt: J.Crew Factory, similar // leopard flat sandals: Urban Outfitters, exact

day twenty:

denim jacket: J.Crew Factory, similar // black maxi dress: Lands’ End, exact // turquoise pendant necklace: Kendra Scott, similar // gold wedge sandals: Lauren Ralph Lauren, exact

day twenty-one:

white lace tee: J.Crew Factory, similar // skinny jeans: BP, similar // tan clog sandals: Lotta from Stockholm, exact // turquoise pendant necklace: Kendra Scott, similar

I think my favorite look from this batch is the one with the black maxi dress–I was kind of burned out on maxi dresses for a while after pregnancy, as I wore them A LOT that summer (check the maternity style category), but I’m now remembering how comfy they are for summertime. That being said, I’m still not brave enough to re-mix a dress two days in a row; I feel like my co-workers would notice!

Take One, Pass It On: Week 1 Recap

I’ve made it through the first week of the Take One, Pass It On challenge. I’m enjoying this challenge thus far; I like how it forced me to plan my outfits for the week, thereby freeing up some time on weekday mornings. Plus, I’ve gotten a bit more creative with what I wear to work, which is always a plus! Here’s a look at the past week’s looks:
